So, you're finally ready to climb Mount Everest? Here's how to prepare. For those of you who've been dreaming of taking on the big mountain, today we'll cover your first steps as you prepare for this lifetime goal. We hope that this article will give you a leg up and keep you safe and sound during your ascent to the summit. We're going to break your trip up into four stages: preparation, training, climbing and summiting. Most of you will begin preparing for this climb well in advance; we hope that our tips will help get you over the hump and that you'll be ready to reach the top. One note about preparation: You should always consult a physician before undertaking a major life change such as a climb up Mount Everest. The Preparation Stage This is where you'll do research and take care of all non-climbing-related details before leaving home. Here are our tips for getting ready. The Training Stage - ... Osama bin Laden is dead, and we hope we've killed him for good. The U.S. Navy SEALs who ended the Al-Qaeda leader's life deserve all our praise and thanks. But now what? Now we need to heal as a country and as a people and come together to face the challenges ahead. What does that mean for you? It means that it's time to go beyond the rhetoric of healing and figure out how to build a better world without Bin Laden, where terrorists like him won't take root again. And as you're healing as a country, you should also be healing as an individual. This is not the time to sit on your butt and watch TV. You have a chance now to work on that pesky anxiety disorder, to take a class in a subject you've always been interested in, or even to take a trip around the world. How can you heal yourself? Here's one simple way: The Climbing Stage - Congratulations! You have finally made it to base camp. Well, not quite; base camp is at 17,600 feet (about 5 kilometers) above sea level. You're not there yet, but you're about halfway up; that puts you at 12,400 feet, or three kilometers above the ground. Base camp is where it begins to get serious. You are leaving behind lower elevations and no longer living for your daily fix of oxygen. At base camp you have two choices: Give up now or prepare to go higher. The Summit Stage - After 20-plus hours on the slopes, many climbers are probably thinking that they don't want to move. Yet if they stay there too long, they'll die of hypothermia. So what do you do? You have two choices: Give up now or give one more push for the top. cfa1e77820
